EVENTS - JUNE Talk: The Bishopp Family of Henfield & Parham – By Various Adventures and Many Crises
Talk by Robert Gordon (Chairman, the Friends of Henfield Museum), all proceeds to the Friends. 19:30, Thursday 20th June, Henfield Hall Garden Room, £5 including refreshments.
Take a tour through the history of one of Henfield’s most fascinating families… Beginning in the early 16th century with the rise, election to parliament and arrival at Parsonage House in Henfield of Thomas Byshopp Esquire, the tale moves on to the purchase of and beginning of the family association with Parham House by his son Sir Thomas Bishopp, first to hold the newly created Parham baronetcy. The tale continues with the resistance and capture of his son Sir Edward Bishopp at Arundel Castle during the Civil War and the dramatic transatlantic escape to Virginia Colony of his brother Colonel Henry Bishopp of Henfield fame – later to become first Postmaster General on the Restoration.
Discover who in the family was responsible for a notorious London murder and how Henry’s sister Elizabeth left a legacy that contributes to Henfield to this day.
